Athletics Track and Field Events All Events & Rules

Athletics Track and Field Events plays a huge role in the world of sports.  This includes running, jumping, discus throw, javelin etc.  And it is divided into three parts.

  1. Track Events
  2. Field Events
  3. Combined Events

1. Track Events (Running Races)

  • Sprint Races (Short Distance)
  • 100m, 200m, 400m
  • Runners stay in separate lanes.
  • A false start means automatic disqualification.
  • If any player crosses the line first with his torso in the final round, he is declared the winner.

Middle-Distance Races

  • 800m, 1500m
  • Runners start in lanes but can merge after a certain point.
  • Requires both speed and endurance.

Long-Distance Races

  • 3000m Steeplechase
  • Includes water jumps and hurdles.
  • Stepping outside the track results in disqualification.
  • 5000m & 10,000m
  • Run on a standard 400m track (12.5 and 25 laps).
  • Pushing or blocking is not allowed.

Marathon (42.195 km)

  • Takes place on roads with water stations.
  • First runner to cross the finish line wins.

Hurdles & Relay Races

  • 100m Hurdles (Women) / 110m Hurdles (Men), 400m Hurdles
  • Runners must clear hurdles; knocking them down doesn’t disqualify them.
  • Skipping a hurdle results in disqualification.
  • 4x100m & 4x400m Relay

Teams of four runners.

  • Baton must be passed within a 20m exchange zone.
  • Dropping the baton can result in disqualification.

2. Field Events (Jumping & Throwing)

Jumping Events

  • High Jump
  • Athletes must clear a horizontal bar without knocking it off.
  • Three failed attempts lead to elimination.

Pole Vault

  • Athletes use a long pole to vault over a high bar.
  • Bar height increases each round.

Long Jump

  • Runners sprint and jump into a sandpit.
  • Jump is measured from takeoff to the closest landing mark.

Triple Jump

  • A hop, step, and jump into the sandpit.
  • Same rules as long jump.

Throwing Events

Shot Put

Athletes push a heavy metal ball (shot) as far as possible. In shot put, the player throws the shot with the help of his shoulder inside the circle.  And it must land within the marked area. You have 60 seconds to complete your throw in which the players try their best to throw it well. And the player whose throw goes the farthest will be declared the winner.

During the shot put, any player who steps out of the circle, throws instead of pushing, takes too long to land outside the sector, or violates the law shall be disqualified. Failure to use both hands shall be disqualified.

Discus Throw

A flat, circular disc is thrown from a spinning motion. The discus throw is a major track and field event in which athletes throw a heavy discus while standing inside a marked circle. The throw must land within the 40 sector.  Any player who starts the game may try by standing inside the circle. The discus must be released without spinning and going out. The players’ best attempts are recorded.

Disqualification. Track and Field Events

If a player moves out of the circle before the discs land, they will be disqualified. The target will move out of the sector.  If he crosses the time limit too much, he will still fail. Use illegal discs.

Javelin Throw

A spear-like javelin is thrown for distance.

Must land tip first to count.

Track and Field Events

Hammer Throw

A metal ball attached to a wire is thrown from a spinning motion.

3. Combined Events Track and Field Events

  • Decathlon (Men) / Heptathlon (Women)
  • Multiple events (running, jumping, throwing).
  • Points are given based on performance in each event.

Final Notes

  • Timing & Measurement:
  • Electronic sensors record times for races.
  • Jumps and throws are measured for exact distance.

Disqualification:

False starts, stepping outside the track, or failing three attempts in jumps/throws.

Olympic & World Records:

Records are recognized globally, with athletes trying to beat them.
